The Best Bath Products For Seniors
Seniors often struggle with dry skin. Dehydration, poor diet, living in a dry environment, and other factors like side effects from medication can all contribute to skin dryness in seniors. January is Bath Safety Month and it’s a great time to look at what your senior loved one is putting in their bath as well as looking for ways to keep them safe when they are bathing. Regular bath products and body washes can be very drying and make your senior loved one’s skin even worse. Some of the best things that seniors can use in a bath to soften, moisturize, and soothe inflamed skin are:
Oatmeal
Oatmeal baths and oatmeal based soaps and bath products are fantastic for seniors. Oatmeal baths can get messy but soaking in oatmeal infused water regularly can help heal the skin and hydrate it. Seniors often can benefit from regular oatmeal baths in the winter when the cold air outside and hot and dry air inside can really do a number on their skin. A home care provider that helps your senior loved one with personal care can help make sure that seniors are safe when they are using an oatmeal bath soak.
Aloe
Aloe is famous for soothing burns like sunburns and healing minor skin irritations. In the summer when the weather is hot and dry and seniors often end up with sunburns adding aloe to a bath or using an aloe based cleansing gel can bring seniors relief from the pain and irritation of a sunburn while healing their skin quickly. It’s a good idea to keep some aloe gel in the bathroom and to have aloe bath products handy for your senior loved one. Make sure that the home care provider helping your senior loved one with personal care knows the products are there and that they should help your senior loved one use them.
Chamomile
Chamomile tea is great for bed and it’s also great for senior skin. You or a home care provider can throw some chamomile tea bags into a senior’s bath to create a wonderfully soothing and relaxing bath that will help your senior loved one get ready for sleep as well help heal their skin. Any chamomile tea bags will do, but you can also buy larger sized bath tea bags that are fastened under the faucet to add chamomile to a senior’s bath without any mess.
Lavender
Lavender if one of the gentlest herbs and the most soothing. It can help seniors relax as well as soothe their skin. Lavender flowers can be added to any bath or lavender based bath products can be used to restore hydration and heal a senior loved one’s skin. Just make sure that you don’t use an oil based lavender product because bath oils or oil based shower gels can cause seniors to slip in the tub or shower. Bath teas are a great alternative to bath oils because they have the same effect as bath oils but they are much safer for seniors to use.
